Region
– Ostional is located in the counties of Santa Cruz and Nicoya in the province of Guanacaste on the central Pacific coast. The highlight of this tiny beach town is the Ostional Wildlife Refuge; created in 1984 to protect one of the world’s most important nesting sites of the Olive Ridley sea turtle. The refuge has an area of 791 acres of land and nearly 20,000 acres of marine space. The beach extends inland along the estuaries of the rivers and mangrove swamps, protecting large colonies of birds. The refuge stretches from Punta India to Punta Guiones, encompassing the beaches of Ostional, Nosara, and Guiones.

Project Overview – As a volunteer at the Ostional Sea Turtle Project in Costa Rica, you will be working to protect sea turtles in their natural habitat, in the National Wildlife Reserve. Turtles nest at Ostional year round, but peak time is during the rainy season, from August through December. During the “arribada”, thousands of sea turtles come to one specific mile of beach at Ostional to mass nest and dig their eggs into the black, volcanic sand. Our Volunteers will participate in the following activities: monitoring and registering nesting patterns, record keeping of eggs, moving eggs to the hatchery, beach patrols, freeing of the newborns to the ocean, cleaning and preparing the beach. The National parks have faced budget cutbacks and personnel shortages so volunteering helps to preserve the conservation efforts for these beautiful creatures; without outside assistance, these projects would be lost. This project will have some odd working hours (in the night) but you will enjoy plenty of beach time. Your efforts will make serious contributions to help ensure these beautiful animals continued survival. This project will provide hands-on training and a unique opportunity to explore the natural habitat of these amazing turtles; all while having a great time in this Pacific beach town.
