Region
– Tortuguero, which can be translated as Land of Turtles, is a village on the Northern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica in the Limón Province. It gave its name to the neighboring Tortuguero National Park. The village is situated on a sand bar island, separated from the mainland by Tortuguero River and bordering the Caribbean Sea. Tortuguero is renowned for its navigable canals that run through the rainforest in the national park, and has such earned the nickname of ‘Central America’s Amazon’. The beaches around Tortuguero are key nesting sites for four species of sea turtle, including two critically endangered species. The National Park is also host to incredible biodiversity of insects, resident and migratory birds, and mammals, including jaguars and four species of monkeys.

Project Overview – Volunteers will travel to the heart of Tortuguero National Park in and join forces with the local conservation teams to help protect endangered sea turtles. You will work directly on monitoring the endangered green, hawksbill and leatherback sea turtles during their nesting season. Our Volunteers will participate in the following activities: monitoring and registering nesting patterns, record keeping of eggs, moving eggs to the hatchery, beach patrols, freeing of the newborns to the ocean, cleaning and preparing the beach. This project will have some odd working hours (in the night) but you will enjoy plenty of beach time. Your efforts will make serious contributions to help ensure these beautiful animals continued survival. This project will provide hands-on training and a unique opportunity to explore the natural habitat of these amazing turtles; all while having a great time in this Caribbean beach town.
